Court requirements, chamber culture, corporate advisory work and client consultations do not follow identical codes. A system handles that; improvisation does not.
Several Codes, One Week
Formal court requirements may be defined, but a lawyer’s wider professional life is not. Client consultations, negotiations and conferences each require appropriate levels of authority and accessibility.
Dressing for court every day is a defensible answer, but it is not a good one for the client meeting or the corporate advisory session.
Begin with the forums you appear in. The list is short, and the rules for each are usually explicit.
Where the Wardrobe Gap Appears
Clothing chosen by habit rather than by forum is the most common version of this, and the easiest to correct.
The wardrobe gap appears when a lawyer relies only on court clothing or uses one level of formality for every interaction.
The Five Ps Within Professional Rules
The Five Ps of Strategic Dressing™ operate within professional requirements, never around them.
-
01
Pigmentation
Choose colours and contrast that keep attention on the face and reproduce well in professional photographs.
-
02
Physique
Use exact fit and controlled proportions; constant adjustment distracts from command.
-
03
Personality
Express identity through refined details while preserving institutional seriousness.
-
04
Profession
Court rules, local legal culture and client expectations take priority.
-
05
Position
Partners, general counsel and senior advocates need additional leadership and media-ready combinations.
The Rules Come First
This lesson carries a constraint the others do not. In law, dress is frequently a matter of rule rather than judgement.
Court dress requirements, chamber conventions and jurisdictional expectations are not style questions and are not open to optimisation. Where a rule exists, it governs completely, and nothing in this framework suggests otherwise.
What the framework addresses is everything the rules leave open — which is considerably more than most practitioners use. Fit, condition, coordination and the choices that apply outside court are where a lawyer’s presence is actually constructed, and they are rarely given any deliberate thought at all.
Where a rule exists it governs completely. The framework works in the very large space the rules leave open.
Putting It Into Practice
Formulas, not outfits. A formula survives laundry, travel and a career.
The Wardrobe Audit
Work through what you own against these four:
- Does this meet the requirements of the forum it is intended for?
- Does it coordinate with at least two other things I own?
- Is its condition equal to its quality?
- Which of my settings does it actually serve?
“Which recurring professional situation currently causes the most uncertainty about what to wear?”
The Forum Map
An hour, once, against a daily decision removed for the rest of your practice.
- Separate court, chamber, client and public-event needs.
- Check every formal garment for fit and condition.
- Prepare two consultation combinations that balance authority and warmth.
- Select one media-ready outfit and photograph it.
You have completed the foundation: establish credibility, hold it without theatrics, make it repeatable. What follows extends these into speech, adversarial settings, reputation and legal leadership.
Your Merit Deserves to Be Seen
Closing the Visibility Gap™ does not mean becoming somebody else. It means helping people recognise more accurately who you already are.
The law and the evidence carry the argument. This simply removes the avoidable reasons for a room to discount it before it is heard.
